WASHINGTON, DC – Wake Up and Dream (WUAD), one of Washington, DC’s newest non-profit organizations, applauds the efforts of over 140 young professionals who gathered on the Potomac waterfront on June 27 to raise awareness for public education in the District of Columbia.

The event, Rock the Boat DC, was the first of two summer community education and fundraising gatherings organized by Wake Up and Dream. Proceeds from the event supported a local charity working to provide high risk youth with the resources to achieve educational and personal success, For Love of Children (FLOC).

Aboard the Celebrity DC, which embarked at sunset on an evening cruise of the Potomac River, attendees mixed and mingled until midnight. The objective was to raise awareness and funding for FLOC’s mission to offer educational services that equip high-risk children and youth with the skills necessary to break the cycle of poverty, become life-long learners, and make substantial contributions to their communities.

“In a city that offers countless social events each night, it’s refreshing to see DC young professionals choose to come together in the spirit of philanthropy,” said Ravi D’Souza of Wake up and Dream. “Rock the Boat is a fun way to meet new people while supporting local charity and learning about some of the serious issues facing our community.”

The event organizers were thrilled that tickets for the inaugural event sold out just hours before the boat left the dock. The ticket price included food, drinks, and music by DJ TMY (Tommy Cornelis). The unprecedented turnout helped to surpass their initial fundraising goal.

“The support we got from the community and local sponsors including Capitol City Brewing Company, Cruzan Rum, Bang Salon, BKSH and Associates and Capital Yacht Charters was extremely generous and really made this event a success,” said event organizer Theresa Weber.

The second summer cruise takes place on Saturday, August 29th. Proceeds for this event will benefit Sitar Arts Center, a nonprofit organization that provides multidisciplinary arts education to the children and youth of Washington, DC in a nurturing, creative community where young people discover their inherent talents and gifts.
